MEMORY: Christoph Prégardien, tenor & Stefan Litwin, piano | WSN 23-24

February 11 @ 3:00 pm

Stefan Litwin and Christoph Pregardien

Christoph Prégardien, tenor
Stefan Litwin, piano

MEMORY: Songs by Franz Schubert, Gustav Mahler, Hugo Wolf, Charles Ives, Hanns Eisler and others

This program by Christoph Prégardien and Stefan Litwin is an exception among Lieder recitals. The two do not present a sequence of individual numbers but have conceived a program in which all the songs are interwoven into one composition. Around the music of Hanns Eisler — Schoenberg’s student, the supporter of the Weimar Republic labor movement, the U.S. exile, and lastly the national composer of the GDR— a Lieder program has been created that traverses the various forms of expression of the genre “Lied.” In flashbacks, Eisler’s political songs are combined with songs of the 19th century; beginning with folk songs, the distant memory of the past, the path leads to the romantic motif of nature; nature as a place of longing, as a place of the primordial and the divine-paradise-like original state. In their path of remembrance, the two artists finally reach the darkness and turmoil of war, a world of destruction, loss, strangeness — yet not without hope.
