The Department of Music takes pride in our role as a community musical resource, and we’re glad to recommend several opportunities for finding quality musical instruction in our area.

  1. While our Department faculty primarily teach private lessons for course credit, they can potentially recommend a qualified UNC student teacher or community professional. Fill out the interest form below to direct a teacher request to the appropriate faculty member.
  2. The Chapel Hill Music Teachers Association maintains a list of music teachers and can also provide assistance in locating a private lesson instructor.
  3. For Over 18 students seeking voice lessons:
    1. If you are a current UNC undergraduate student:
      1. We offer lessons for credit through the Music Department. Please contact Professor Timothy Sparks: if you are interested in enrolling in lessons as a class: tsparks@email.unc.edu
      2. If you are interested in non-credit private lessons with another UNC undergraduate student, you may email Jeanne Fischer with information on your music background, year at UNC, and preferred musical genre(s): fischerj@email.unc.edu.
    2. If you are a Community Member or Grad/Professional Student, we are not currently able to offer any lessons for adult beginners with UNC faculty or students.
      1. If you are an experienced singer or musician, the following current or recent faculty may be able to accommodate you in their private studios: Dr. Daniel Collins or Dr. Lori Hicks (virtual only).
      2. If you are a beginner, there are many options for lessons in and around the Chapel Hill community: Chapel Hill School of Musical Arts, Skylark Music School, or Chapel Hill Music Teachers Association.
