James Pruett taught at UNC after his graduation. He was elected president of the Music Library Association from 1973 to 1975, and from 1987 to 1994, he was the Director of the Music Division of the Library of Congress. He and his wife, fellow UNC musicologist Lilian Pruett (PhD 1960), remained important members of the UNC musicology community for years.
