The UNC Etude Festival (October 26–November 2, 2014) will explore the etude as a musical genre, from its origins in the technical and musical study pieces of the nineteenth century through its contemporary use as a vehicle for compositional exploration. The festival will reflect the vibrancy of the etude tradition through a wide variety of performances by UNC faculty and students, culminating in a premiere of African American composer Leslie Adams’ Piano Etudes, which blend a neo-romantic classical style with influences from popular and jazz traditions.
