An Evening of Kathakali: Lecture, Demonstration, and Performance

Join the Department of Music and Carolina Asia Center for an afternoon of Kathakali! We are excited to welcome Dr. Kaladharan Viswanath, emeritus of the Kerala Kalamandalam University for a lecture on Kathakali, as well as Manoj Kumar and his disciple, Akhila, our Kathakali performers.

Program

3:00 – 4:15 PM: Kathakali Lecture-Demonstration

4:30 – 7:30 PM: Public application of costume and make-up: The public is invited to come watch as the performers apply their make-up and costumes.

7:30 PM: a pre-performance lecture on Kathakali’s history, development, and aesthetics, as well as on the excerpt being played.

8:00 – 9:30 PM: Kathakali Performance

All segments of the event are free and open to the public! Please feel free to drop by for any portion of the event. Attendance for the entirety is not required but appreciated.
