In light of Chancellor Folt and the Board of Trustees’ Recommendation for the Disposition and Preservation of the Confederate Monument, on December 5th the Department of Music faculty voted to reaffirm our position against any public display of the statue.
The monument known as “Silent Sam” compromises the principles of light and liberty that guide the mission of our university. The statue’s message and its public display undercut our claims to uphold human dignity and to model our actions for the greater good. Therefore, we, the UNC Department of Music, are against any public display of the statue.
