Students planning to audition for the Department as part of their university application should visit this page for general information about procedures and dates. Initial auditions will occur in November for Early Action applicants and late January/early February for Regular Decision applicants; taped auditions are also accepted. Semifinalists will be invited back to campus for another round of auditions.

This page offers more specific information for the Composition Area. Request an audition using this form.

IMPORTANT – After completing the online form, in order to schedule an audition in composition, students must contact Evan Feldman (Co-Chair of the Scholarship Committee; evanfeldman@unc.edu) and inform him that you would like to audition for a scholarship in composition.

The audition can be considered part of consideration for scholarship as well as admission, but all appropriate applications must first be submitted to UNC admissions before an audition date will be granted.

The audition consists of a meeting with the composition faculty, playing a recording (CD preferred) of 1-2 original compositions, and presenting and discussing the score(s). Applicants will be considered for a scholarship by the creativity and cohesiveness of the presented composition(s), the effectiveness of the notation (where applicable), and the applicant’s ability to communicate and discuss the music.

Students are encouraged to contact directly by email or phone Composition Professor Allen Anderson, who will be able to answer your questions and advise in the application process.
