While at UNC, Williams worked as an assistant music librarian, and he graduated from the program with an additional degree in library science. He was hired by Ball State University in Iowa to develop their music library so that it could support their newly-founded doctoral program. He worked at Ball State, where he became a full professor and Chair of the Library Faculty, until 1995. He was also a passionate and accomplished glider pilot.
