Dr. Lilian Pruett taught at UNC for several years after completing her degree before becoming earning a professorship at North Carolina Central University in 1965, a position she held until her retirement in 1998. She remains a fixture of both this department and North Carolina’s musicology scene: together with her husband, UNC music department chair James W. Pruett (PhD 1962), she established the Pruett Summer Research Fellowship for graduate students, and in 2019, she became the first honorary member of the American Musicological Society’s Southeast chapter, of which she had previously served as secretary-treasurer and president. You can read more about her in a department feature here.
