Dr. Farlow was Associate Professor of Music at Western Carolina University from 1968 to 1995. Despite multiple applications for promotion to full professor with the recommendation of her department, she was repeatedly denied a promotion. She filed a sexual discrimination suit against the university as a result of this process. Although the court acknowledged a prima facie case of discrimination, it did not find sufficient evidence of a Title VII violation on the part of the university administrators.
