Dr. Fruchtman taught music history, theory, and early music performance at the University of Memphis between 1967 and 1988. He frequently performed on viola da gamba as part of a duo with his wife, Caroline Sites Fruchtman, who in 1959 became the first woman to receive a PhD in music from UNC.
