Anna Lampidis

Lecturer (Oboe)

Oboe and English hornist Anna Lampidis (Lecturer) joined the music faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the fall of 2015. Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Anna enjoys a diverse career as an orchestral player, chamber musician, soloist, teacher, clinician and mentor.

Since 2004, she has served as Principal Oboe of the Salisbury Symphony and also holds positions of Oboe and English horn with the Greensboro Symphony and the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle. She often performs with the Carolina Chamber Symphony Players. Additional engagements have also included Opera Carolina, Carolina Ballet, Winston Salem Symphony, New Haven Symphony, Miami City Ballet and New World Symphony.

Acknowledged for her beautiful tone and expressiveness, her playing has been described as “impeccable”, “lovely” and “outstanding” in concert reviews by Classical Voice North Carolina. Her degrees include a DMA in Oboe Performance from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and an MM from Yale University, where she was recipient of the Lucy G. Moses Fellowship which is awarded to a student of exceptional promise in the field of woodwinds.  Her BM degree is from the University of Miami (Florida).

Dr. Lampidis has performed throughout the United States as soloist and chamber musician. Orchestra tours have led to performances at Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center and as far away as Seoul, South Korea. She has also performed at numerous regional and International conferences and conventions including those of International Double Reed Society, Sigma Alpha Iota, American Choral Directors Association, Florida Bandmasters Association, American Bandmasters Association, College Band Director National Association, North Carolina Music Educators Association and the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of College Music Society.

With a love for performing as soloist, Anna made her solo debut at the age of 15 under the baton of legendary conductor and composer John P. Paynter performing an arrangement of Telemann’s Sonata in A minor specially arranged for her to premiere with his band at Northwestern University. Since then she has won First Prize in several concerto and chamber music competitions. As a member of the Elektra Quintet she was awarded the Bill Willer 1st Prize in the 1999 Carmel Chamber Music Competition (California).  In most recent years, she has appeared as soloist with the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle, Salisbury Symphony, Carolina Philharmonic, North Carolina Symphony, University of North Carolina at Greensboro Symphony Orchestra and the Sewanee Summer Music Festival to name a few. She has premiered works by composers Michael Colgrass and Bill Douglas and recorded with composer Frank McCarty. She can be heard in recordings on the Albany, VoChor, Crescent Moon and Centaur Labels.

A passionate educator, Anna maintains a large private studio and is an active oboe and woodwind coach of chamber music and orchestral literature in North Carolina. She has also been a clinician for oboe workshops, and adjudicator for NC Governor’s School and GMTA. She has been an oboe instructor at the UNC-Greensboro Summer Music Camp for 10 years and most recently joined the summer oboe faculty at Bocal Majority/Operation Oboe.

Dr. Lampidis also serves as a member of the music faculty at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina where she teaches and performs with the Faculty Woodwind Quintet and Trio. In 2010, she also joined the music faculty at Salem College. She currently resides in Greensboro, North Carolina and remains a sought after private teacher, clinician and free-lance oboist.
