MUSC 051 — FYS: The Interplay of Music and Physics — Wissick (TR 2:00 p.m. – 3:15 p.m.)

This seminar focuses on the variety of performances presented by Carolina Performing Arts at Memorial Hall. Through attendance at performances and through research on the performing artists and the works being performed, students explore questions such as, How does music reflect culture? How does the culture shape the art form?

MUSC 063 — FYS: Music on Stage & Screen — MacNeil (TR 12:30 p.m. – 1:45 p.m.)

Offers tools and techniques for understanding multimedia, staged musical works like opera, musical theater, and film. The goal of the seminar is to develop students’ analytical skills n verbal and nonverbal media and t encourage their visualization of the potential and implications of artistic forms and structures.

Notational and theoretical materials of music, with musicianship skills developed. Intended for the non-major who wishes to learn to express musical ideas in clear, correct notational form.

Corequisite, MUSC 131. Basic musicianship skills, including musical notation, basic composition, score analysis, keyboard, sight seeing, and ear training.

MUSC 131 — Music Theory I — Neal (TR, 9:30 a.m. – 10:45 a.m.)

Enrollment subject to a placement test. An introduction to music theory and analysis for students who intend to pursue a music degree. Course covers basic principles of melody, counterpoint, rhythm, and meter.

MUSC 142.1 — Great Musical Works — Jennings (MW, 11:15 a.m. – 12:05 p.m.) plus recitation

MUSC 144 — Introduction to Country Music — Neal (TR, 12:30 p.m. – 1:45 p.m.)

A survey and investigation of country music from 1920 to the present. Music of Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline, Garth Brooks, and others.

MUSC 146 — World Music — Figueroa (MW, 2:30 p.m. – 3:20 p.m.) plus recitation

The study of music in and as culture. Topics may include the performance of Native America, south Asia, Australia, Africa, east Asia, southeast Asia, Europe, and the Americas.

MUSC 147 — Introduction to Latina/o Music — Álamo (MWF, 10:10 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.)

An introduction to contemporary Latin(o) American popular music, focusing on how musicians have negotiated an increasingly global popular culture industry.

MUSC 155 — Art and Culture of the DJ — Dilday (TR, 3:30 p.m. – 4:45 p.m.)

An exploration of the important, often misunderstood role of the DJ in  modern musical life, with particular attention to the ways in which DJing challenges traditional notions of music, musicianship, and musical instruments. Guest lectures, demonstrations, and tutorials by visiting DJs form a significant component of the course.

MUSC 158 — Rock Lab — Brackett (T, 6:00 p.m. – 8:50 p.m.)

An introduction to the issues of performance practice in rock music and related styles and genres including, but not limited to, soul, funk, new wave, and punk. Through intensive coaching and rehearsal students learn performance, transcription, arranging, and improvisation.

MUSC 166 — Introduction to Composition — Anderson, S. (TR, 2:00 p.m. – 3:15 p.m.)

Prerequisite, MUSC 131. The study of compositional techniques and the development of individual creative styles through imitative and original writing.

MUSC 226 — Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion, and Strings — Golden (TR, 9:30 a.m. – 10:45 a.m.) (W, 8:00 a.m. – 8:50 a.m.)

Primarily for students pursuing teacher licensure. An introduction to basic performance skills on representative woodwind, brass, percussion, and string instruments.

MUSC 227 — Strings, Keyboard, and Vocal Elementary Techniques — Huff (TR, 2:00 p.m. – 3:15 p.m.)

Primarily for students pursuing teacher licensure. An introduction to basic performance skills in voice and piano, and approaches to teaching elementary music.

MUSC 230 — Musicianship III — Weisert (M, 11:15 a.m. – 12:05 p.m.) plus recitation

Prerequisites, MUSC 132 and 133; corerequisite, MUSC 232. A continuation of MUSC 133, with emphasis n intermediate- to advanced-level musicianship skills.

MUSC 232 — Music Theory III — Anderson, A. (MWF, 10:10 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.)

Prerequisite MUSC 132. Prerequisite requires a a grade of C or better. A continuation of MUSC 132, covering topics including chromatic harmony and form.

MUSC 236 — Keyboard Skills II — Otten (TR, 12:30 p.m. – 1:45 p.m.)

Prerequisite, MUSC 136. Continues group piano instruction for music majors begun in MUSC 136.

MUSC 239 — Music Technology — Richmond (MWF, 12:20 p.m. – 1:20 p.m.)

A practical study of selected aspects of computerized music technology, including one or more of music-notation software, MIDI sequencing, digital sound production and storage, and computer composition.

MUSC 251 — Early Modern Music — Jennings (MWF, 9:05 a.m. – 9:55 a.m.)

May not count for music or general elective credit for music majors/ The study of music in its historical and cultural contexts in the medieval and early modern eras.

MUSC 255 — Music History II — Jennings (TR, 11:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.)

Prerequisites, MUSC 132 and 254. Permission of the instructor for students lacking the prerequisites. A continuation of MUSC 254, surveying music of the period since 1750 in its stylistic, geographical, political, social, and cultural contexts.

Prerequisites, MUSC 135 and 163. Composing and arranging for small- and large-group jazz ensembles.

Music’s roles in war and revolution within various political, social, and cultural contexts. Part of the cluster “War, Revolution, and Cultural – Transatlantic Perspectives, 1750-1850”

Prerequisite, MUSC 168. Intermediate conducting for instrumental or vocal ensembles.

Prerequisite, MUSC 168. Intermediate conducting for instrumental or vocal ensembles.

MUSC 355 — Topics in Music History: What About Rhythm? — Pierson (TR, 9:30 a.m. – 10:45 a.m.)

Prerequisite, MUSC 254. Course will address a particular genre, composer, compositional issue, or repertoire, including non-Western and popular musics. Subject matter will vary with the instructor. May be repeated for credit if on a different topic.

MUSC 390H — Honors Seminar: Musical Politics and Resistance — Litwin (TR, 2:00 p.m. – 3:15 p.m.)

Detailed investigation of a specific musical topic from historical and/or theoretical perspectives.

MUSC 471 — Instrumental Performance Repertory — TBA

Advanced study of selected performance issues. Maybe repeated for credit.

MUSC 493 — Music Internship — Staff (TBA)

Permission of the director of undergraduate studies. Internship directly related to the study, practice, or the business of music. Students must complete at least 100 hours and submit a journal and report upon completion of the internship.

ECON 327 — Business Venturing Workshop — Weiss (TR, 12:30 p.m. – 1:45 p.m.)

Prerequisite, ECON 325 or PLCY 327. Permission of the instructor for students lacking the prerequisite. A comprehensive survey of commercial venturing throughout the lifestyle of a venture from initial conception to execution and exit. Outlines strategies of entrepreneurs to develop ventures in different commercial markets.

PORT 316 — Brazilian Performance in Music and Dance — Castelloes, F (TR, 12:30 p.m. – 1:45 p.m.)

Study of Brazilian capoeira from its roots to the present day. Focus on verbal and nonverbal discourse experienced through the rules, songs, movements, rhythms, and rituals of capoeira. In English; credit for major/minor Portuguese if readings and written work are done in Portuguese.
