UNC Summer Jazz Workshop Application Form

NOTE FROM DR. Before filling out the application form for the UNC Summer Jazz Workshop, please first visit http://music.unc.edu/summerjazzworkshop in order to familiarize yourself with important information about the program. The SJW will be held Monday-Friday, June 24–28, 2024.
The UNC Summer Jazz Workshop accepts rising 8th grade middle school students through college students and adults. Rising high school seniors and older participants may opt to take the workshop as MUSC 364 for 3.0 college credit hours, while others may opt to take the participate in the “Community Workshop” for non-college credit.
Students who wish to be involved in the workshop and yet not perform may opt to enroll in the "Jazz History/Music Journalism Through Social Media (non-performance) track" of MUSC 364 to receive 3.0 credit hours while satisfying the Experiential Education credit at UNC). These students will attend classes in jazz history and basic music skills, as well as and learning how to write reviews, such as blogs and tweets on social media venues, about each concert. These students will not be expected to participate in combos or to perform in the final student concert.
Please indicate below whether you wish to apply as a performer in the general Community portion of the workshop, or as a performer who enrolls in the MUSC 364 UNC college course, or as non-performer who is enrolled in the Jazz History/Basic Music Skills/Social Media section of MUSC 364. For those who wish to enroll in MUSC 364 to receive college credit who are not current UNC students, once the SJW application is approved by Dr. Anderson, there is a separate process that is handled through UNC Summer School that allows students to receive college credit by being admitted to UNC Summer School on a “Visitor” status. This process is detailed at http://summer.unc.edu/application-and-admission/#apply and involves creating a Guest ID account, submitting letters of recommendation, proof of residency status, and submitting a separate application to UNC Summer School. UNC Summer School will not accept application materials for non-UNC students after June 1 annually, so if you plan to enroll in the workshop for college credit, it is important to submit all materials to them early.
Applying as?*
- I am applying as a performer in the Comunity Summer Jazz Workshop (non-college credit)—$385 program fee (does not include housing or the meal plan). Students in the general community portion of the workshop may opt to join the morning theory class (non-credit section), the afternoon improvisation class, play in a combo, participate in group lessons, play in afternoon and evening jam sessions, and attend the evening concerts. The full schedule is 10am-9pm daily (with breaks in between), though students in Community SJW may opt to begin their day starting with the Improvisation class at 12:20pm if preferred.
- I am applying as a performer in the MUSC 364 Summer Jazz Workshop (for 3.0 college credit hours)—$25 program fee paid to the workshop + UNC tuition that is paid separately to the University through “Connect Carolina” once enrolled (visit http://summer.unc.edu/ for current UNC tuition rates). This course satisfies the Experiential Education credit that is required at UNC. Students will take the morning theory and improvisation classes (college-credit section), play in a combo, participate in group lessons, play in afternoon and evening jam sessions, and attend evening faculty concerts. The schedule is 9:30am-9pm daily (with breaks in between).
- I am applying for the Jazz History/Basic Music Skills/Social Media section (not performing in combos) of the MUSC 364 Summer Jazz Workshop (3.0 college credit hours)—$25 program fee paid to the workshop + UNC tuition that is paid separately to the University through “Connect Carolina” once enrolled (visit http://summer.unc.edu/ for current UNC tuition rates). Refund Policy and Combo Organization by Instruments
Refund Policy and Combo Organization by Instruments Because it is necessary that we carefully balance our registration and expenses according to the number of applications that we receive each year by instrument type (i.e., 11-12 bass slots, 11-12 drum slots, 12-15 keyboard slots, 12-15 saxophones etc.), we consequently establish the number of combos directly around the instrumentation of the applicants that we receive each year. Correspondingly, we carefully gauge any necessary equipment purchases, we hire faculty and staff, plan our facility use fees and fees to Granville Towers, we purchase food and T-shirts etc., according to the number of applicants we can accept each year. For this reason WE CANNOT REFUND ANY PAYMENTS AFTER MAY 1 ANNUALLY.

Related to this admittance process, we hope that applicants will understand that when a student decides to drop out at the last minute, their absence adversely affects the organization of all of the groups and creates confusion during the opening days of the workshop as we have to try to juggle the instrumentation of the groups in order to accommodate the sudden change in instrumental personnel. Each participant is a member of a team and is needed for the collective benefit of the whole.
