Sophia Rekeibe
Sophia Rekeibe is a Arab-Latinx senior from Rocky Mount, North Carolina double majoring in Music Performance and Sociology. She is currently the co-director of the Music Ambassadors program. She has been a trombone player for the UNC Wind-Ensemble the past three years; other ensembles she has participated in are UNC trombone studio, UNC trombone chamber ensemble, and UNC baroque trombone ensemble. This past summer Sophia participated in the 2020 Moore Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program to conduct an original research project. Under the guidance of Dr. Michael Figueroa, her research examined how Mona Haydar, an Arab-American Muslim rapper, is responding to contemporary Orientalism and global patriarchy through the imagery and musical content of her songs. Sophia is an advocate for musicians of color and is undergoing the process of creating a BIPOC undergraduate board for the UNC Music Department.
