Gabriel Richard

Gabriel Richard (Lecturer) has a renowned career in music, having served as Solo Violin at the Opéra de Lyon, First Violin at the Paris Orchestra, and First Violin of the Thymos String Quartet. With the Thymos Quartet, Richard has performed at the Ravinia Festival, and several times at the Paris International String Quartet Biennial and Kennedy Center. Richard has recorded three CDs with Thymos and the pianist and conductor Christoph Eschenbach. They won the Editor’s Choice Award from Gramophone magazine in 2012 for their recording of Dvorak (AVIE, 2015), and a Critic’s Choice from Gramophone and a BBC Chamber Choice for their last CD on Schubert (AVIE, 2020). Steve Reich declared Richard’s interpretation of his own piece “Violin Phase” at the Cité de la Musique “probably the best performance of the piece I have ever heard.” The Washington Post described the Thymos Quartet’s performance at the Kennedy Center as “detailed down to the last atom and overflowing with human experience.”
When not touring in Japan, Korea, China, America, and Europe, Gabriel Richard is Associate Research Professor in the Department of Romance Studies at Duke University, where he also teaches Chamber Music in the Music Department. He is also a lecturer of violin in the music department at UNC-Chapel Hill.
