ARTHUR LIPNER belongs to that rare category of master player that includes Oscar Peterson and Art Tatum…” Chronicle Herald (Nova Scotia)Arthur Lipner specializes in vibraphone, marimba and steel drums. His career has spanned three decades and is going stronger than ever since he began performing professionally at age 14.  With his musical training beginning at age six on classical piano, he has emerged as one of the leading vibes and marimba voices of today, one of the few carrying the message of jazz mallets into the 21st century.  Lipner is recognized by musicians and educators around the world as having made critical contributions to the field of music through his recordings, books and live appearances. His live appearances and recordings convey a fresh, creative approach to his instruments and blending of musical elements and styles from around the globe. Venues at which Arthur has appeared is perhaps unrivaled: in addition to concert halls, jazz clubs and recording studios around the world, he has performed with Tuvan Throat Singers from Russia, The National Dance Company of Ghana in a small rural village, in the streets of Rio de Janeiro for Carnival, in Chiapas Mexico’s “Marimba Park”, at the Royal Palace in Marrakesh, and in the mountains of Norway on an ice xylophone he constructed. The story of his inner and outer journeys is included in the newly released documentary TALKING STICKS (2016).  As a soloist and bandleader Lipner has been to most of the United States, and over 25 foreign countries including Australia, New Zealand, Ghana, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Costa Rica, Croatia, Scotland, Morocco, Malaysia and the Caribbean. He has toured in Europe 38 times and Brazil 18 times, premiering his concerto MALLET FANTASIA with the Nat’l Symphony of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro.  Arthur performed Ney Rosauro’s “Concerto For Marimba and Orchestra #1” as Guest Soloist with the Walla Walla Symphony (WA) in 2021.Arthur has presented over 300 workshops on six continents, including The Juilliard School (NYC), Yale University, Sweelink Conservatory (Amsterdam) and Sydney Conservatorium.  Arthur was head of Percussion Studies at the University of Bridgeport (CT) from 1986-1989. He was on the Guest faculty of The Brabants Conservatory in Tilburg, Holland (1985-1990), Drummers Collective in    NYC,  and an adjunct faculty member at SUNY Purchase(1998-2001). From 2000-2008 Lipner served on the Board of Directors of The Percussive Arts Society. About 100 of Arthur’s compositions have been released on recordings, many on his eight solo album projects.Active as a NYC session player, he has recorded a wide variety of album in the USA and overseas. His steel drums can be heard on the inflight safety video for United Airlines. Lipner’s music has been used on radio, film and tv soundtracks in such places as Finland, Japan, Belgium, The Netherlands, and England. Arthur has written several widely-adopted method books, including THE VIBES REAL BOOK (1996) and “Jazz Mallets: IN SESSION” (2000), the first-ever play-along book for vibes and marimba.  All Lipner compositions and recordings are available at MalletWorks Music (  Arthur’s educational activities are sponsored by the Conn-Selmer Corporation, Mike Balter Mallets and MalletWorks Music. He is a member of the professional organizations PAS, JEN, AFM and BMI.
