As part of the Fred and Gail Fearing “Jazz for a Friday Afternoon” series, UNC’s Jazz Combos will perform alongside Sara Caswell, violin. This performance is free and open to the public.
There is a strong tradition of high-caliber jazz performance at UNC. The jazz area consists of performance ensembles, including the UNC Jazz Band and five jazz combos, as well as course offerings in jazz theory/harmony, jazz improvisation, jazz history, and jazz arranging. The Jazz Band and the jazz combos provide concerts on campus twice each semester, and these concerts are often given in conjunction with guest artists.
Sara Caswell “is a brilliant world-class violinist…one of the very best of the present generation of emerging young jazz stars” according to the late David Baker, internationally-renowned jazz educator and former Director of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. Rooted in an early exposure to a variety of musical genres, Sara’s technical facility on the violin intertwined with her gift for lyricism continues to attract growing attention to her artistry as a jazz soloist, sideman, and teacher.
