Alumnus Noah Balamucki is a composer/pianist in the Screen Scoring master's program at New York University, class of 2021. He likes writing music that is fun and fast, though he has come to learn that "fun" is a subjective term.

Fall and Take Flight  is co-composed by NYU grad students Noah Balamucki and Fadi Khoury, in honor of the sci-fi films they grew up on. Fadi’s gritty guitar-and-synthscape mode of writing expresses itself in the piece’s first half: a dystopian landscape not dissimilar to the ravaged Manhattan of the film Escape from New York (any likeness to the composers’ actual escape from Manhattan in mid-March is purely coincidental). This dark material eventually evolves into Noah’s ode to the idealist future of Star Trek, and draws inspiration from the Trek scores by Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner, and Cliff Eidelman.

These days it feels like civic responsibility is breathing down our necks without a mask. The composers are grateful for the stories that help us escape from it all, that direct our imaginations in hopeful pursuits, and that might even give us helpful new perspectives on the problems of our present. We should always be antiracists and feminists and tortured students of moral philosophy. But we should always be escapists, too.

Compose Carolina: Summer Music Series

UNC Department of Music and Carolina Performing Arts are thrilled to co-host Compose Carolina, a weekly livestream concert series highlighting UNC Music’s composition student and alumni musicians’ original compositions, with conversations led by UNC Department of Music faculty members.

Each week, we’ll welcome a new Carolina composer, including alumni Eliana Fishbeyn, Noah Balamucki, and Christian Cail and students David Green, Alex McKeveny, and James Larkins, who will explore the theme “Looking Forward”—from the literal to the metaphorical—through an original musical piece and performance. They’ll be joined in conversation by UNC Department of Music professors Allen Anderson, Stephen Anderson, and Lee Weisert.
