Compose Carolina: David Green
July 17 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pmFree
“The concept of “Looking Forward” is associated in my mind broadly with optimism. However, the need to look forward, it seems to me, must be spurred by some dissatisfaction with the present; in other words, there must be something to look forward to, something which implicitly is superior to the status quo. In this age of oppression, systemic racism, violence, and disease—to name only a few ubiquities—there is no shortage of issues to rectify. But looking forward requires hope above all, and thanks to the efforts and activism of countless people both in America and spanning the globe, it seems that we as a society have much to look forward to.
My original composition, a yet untitled duet for cello and piano, takes several approaches to “Looking Forward.” It’s questioning, dark, and even violent in places, juxtaposed with a primary motif built on an ascending Lydian scale that to my subjective ear is the musical personification of optimism. However, more important to my compositional process is how the piece “looks forward” structurally. Each theme and motif I explore is derived from the introductory material proceeding the entrance of the first theme; the introduction therefore serves as a sort of Brahmsian foreshadowing of everything that follows. Additionally, the piece is formally palindromic, so that the first half anticipates the second.”
Compose Carolina: Summer Music Series
UNC Department of Music and Carolina Performing Arts are thrilled to co-host Compose Carolina, a weekly livestream concert series highlighting UNC Music’s composition student and alumni musicians’ original compositions, with conversations led by UNC Department of Music faculty members.
Each week, we’ll welcome a new Carolina composer, including alumni Eliana Fishbeyn, Noah Balamucki, and Christian Cail and students David Green, Alex McKeveny, and James Larkins, who will explore the theme “Looking Forward”—from the literal to the metaphorical—through an original musical piece and performance. They’ll be joined in conversation by UNC Department of Music professors Allen Anderson, Stephen Anderson, and Lee Weisert.
