Welcome to the Department of Music’s Areas of Study page. The Department houses two areas (academic and performance) that collaborate together to form one well-rounded Department.

Most music majors take lessons in an instrument or voice, and that’s reflected in the performance area, made up of winds, brass, and percussion; piano; strings; and voice. Students can take their studies a step further in the academic area by focusing on an emphasis, such as composition, jazz, musicology, popular music, or music education.

The “Areas of Study” links pertain to undergraduate courses. For information on the musicology graduate program, click here.
