In July 2021 Associate Professor LaToya Lain sat down with Martha Flowers, the first Black faculty of the UNC Music Department, to discuss her life and career. Ms. Flowers was a fierce trailblazer, a powerhouse singer on the international opera stage, and a mentor to younger singers and students.
“It was truly a privilege to interview Martha Flowers, delving into her unparalleled journey as one of the early pioneers of African-Americans in opera and the first to teach on the music faculty at Carolina. Continuing her legacy fills me with profound honor and a sense of duty to perpetuate her impactful influence in the realm of music and education. I am eternally grateful.” -Dr. LaToya Lain
