Congratulations to Professor Suzi Analogue on her phenomenal scoring of the second season of NPR Music’s hip-hop podcast Louder Than A Riot! The second season premiered in mid-March and there are currently five full episodes available for listening. The second season of Louder Than a Riot “examines who hip-hop marginalizes, and how misogynoir — the specific racist misogyny against Black women — is embedded into the fabric of the culture that we love.”

We reached out to Professor Analogue about her experience composing for this exciting show.

“Working as a composer on NPR’s Louder Than A Riot podcast has been an absolute thrill. Exploring the intricacies of rap culture through the lens of music and storytelling has been an enriching experience, and I can’t wait to bring those insights to my Rap Lab (MUSC 157) curriculum in Spring 2024.

Not only have I had the opportunity to compose for the show, but I’ve also been able to share my knowledge with student beatmakers in my Advanced Beat Making course. Teaching them how to score their original beats for multimedia projects has been a blast. It’s all about helping them understand the nuances of music production in various contexts, and seeing their creativity flourish has been so enlightening.

I’m truly excited about the potential of the music curriculum to provide students with a real-world perspective through this opportunity. Being able to combine my work as a composer on Louder Than A Riot with my teaching in Rap Lab has been a dream come true. I can’t wait to see what the future holds and continue to empower the next generation of music makers to create their own unique soundscapes!”
