Every year, the department looks forward to welcoming new and familiar faces to the spaces of Hill Hall, Person Hall, and Kenan Music Building. We’re so excited to start our new Student Spotlight series to get to know the students better.

Read on to learn more about J Suddreth, a first-year bassoonist (and more)!

UNC Music: What is your name, year, and instrument?

J Suddreth: My name is J, and I am a first-year. I play bassoon in the Symphony Orchestra and cymbals in the Marching Band! I also sing but have yet to join any vocal ensembles on campus.

UNC Music: What is your favorite part of the music department?

JS: I love being a part of the Marching Tar Heels. I’ve made so many friends and made so many good memories just in the few months I’ve been here.

UNC Music: What are some of your non-musical hobbies?

JS: I love to bake, crochet, and play video games (my favorites include The Sims, Stardew Valley, and Minecraft).

UNC Music: Who are your favorite artists at the moment?

JS: My music taste is a little all over the place. Some of my favorites include Hozier, Mother Mother, Taylor Swift, and Glass Animals. I also love listening to musical soundtracks.

UNC Music: Are you team Spotify or Apple Music?

JS: Spotify all the way!
