The Department of Music welcomes the Class of 2021 and is excited to meet all of our new students and see all returners.

Incoming music majors should plan to attend the Music Department Orientation for First-Year and Transfer Students on Sunday, August 20 at 3 p.m. in Kenan Music Building Room 1201.

All faculty and students should plan to attend the Music Department Convocation on Tuesday, August 22 at 4 p.m. in Kenan Music Building Room 1201.

A keyboard skills assessment will be held on Monday, August 21 from 12:30-2:30 p.m. This is intended for Bachelor of Music students only for placement out of MUSC 136 and/or MUSC 236. To sign up or find more information about the assessment, click here.

A theory diagnostic exam should be taken online by all incoming music students. The registration process for music theory courses in the Department begins with a theory diagnostic exam prior to the start of each fall semester. This exam helps students to identify the courses best matched to their theory background, from which they continue into a course of study that corresponds to their degree program, interests, and area(s) of specialization. Any student who intends to major in music, and any student who intends to take MUSC 131 in Spring 2018 should take the Theory Diagnostic Exam. You can find more detailed information and a sample placement exam via the link above. The Theory Diagnostic Exam is available from June through August 20, 2017. For a diagnostic exam sample, click here. If you have questions or need to discuss special circumstances with regard to your theory placement, please contact Professor Jocelyn Neal, jneal@email.unc.edu.

For more information, see our Incoming Music Students page. Information for ensemble auditions will be coming August 1.
