The Music Department helps fund independent research projects in the field of music through the Mildred Brown Mayo Undergraduate Research Fund in Music.

All undergraduate music majors at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are eligible to apply. For the purposes of these awards, research is defined broadly to include academic scholarship in all fields of music, including music history, music theory, ethnomusicology, performance-based projects and composition. Funds may be used for travel and subsistence, project materials, gaining access to resources, etc., as indicated on the application form. Successful applicants will be required to produce a written report on the use of these funds within one month of the completion of the project.

Applications are reviewed by the Music Department’s Undergraduate Research Awards Committee, which consists of the Departmental Honors Advisor (chair), the Director of Undergraduate Studies, and the Department Chair. Applications are reviewed twice each year. Deadlines for the 2023-2024 academic year are October 28 and March 22. Students may submit applications for review in advance of each semester’s deadline. To submit applications for early review, students must request an exception for review and approval by the Department Honors Advisor.

Students wishing to apply for financial support from the Mildred Brown Mayo Undergraduate Research Fund in Music should complete an application form below by the deadline. The Committee will notify students of the outcome of their applications within three weeks after the deadline.

If you are receiving financial aid, please contact the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid for information on how receiving a Mayo award may impact your aid package.

The Mildred Brown Mayo Undergraduate Research Fund in Music is supported through the generosity of Herbert Brown Mayo.
