Purpose

The Undergraduate Music Forum will establish and maintain a purposeful dialogue between students and faculty, and address issues related to all undergraduate students participating in the Department of Music.

Goals

The Undergraduate Music Forum will strive to:

  • gather and communicate information about the department's activities,
  • generate and implement ideas for developing the department's offerings,
  • promote the arts as an integral component of a liberal arts institution, and
  • foster healthy relations between the department, campus, and the community at large.

Membership

The Forum will consist of a Steering Committee and all interested undergraduates.

The Steering Committee will be comprised of

  • 3-5 representative members of the faculty appointed by the Department Chair, which will include the Director of Undergraduate Studies. One will serve as the facilitator/convener.
  • 6-8 students representing the spectrum of students involved in the department.

At the end of each academic year, the faculty and outgoing student representatives of the Steering Committee will review applications for new or continued service. Incoming students have the option of applying in the fall.

Meetings

The Forum will convene at least once each semester for the purpose of sharing the work of the Steering Committee and to allow for discussion from any interested parties about departmental issues. Such meetings should be designed to incorporate a large portion of undergraduates and function as a true forum.

The steering committee will meet as needed, normally twice per semester. A secretary appointed by the faculty facilitator/convener will record all meetings.

Voting will not normally be necessary. The secretary will note varying opinions and/or recommendations and whether a consensus was reached.

Reporting

The Steering Committee will share its work with the faculty and students through minutes and other appropriate avenues of communication. Records will be archived by the Department.

Where appropriate, the Steering Committee informed by the Forum will offer opinions and make recommendations to the Department. The Forum will also seek to aid the Department in implementing initiatives.

Review

The Forum, Steering Committee and their operations will be reviewed at the end of two academic years.
