UNC, Library of Congress launch summer music fellowships Three graduate students in musicology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will research the music of composer Samuel Barber during World War II, the National Negro Opera Company and the 1975 musical “Chicago” with new summer fellowships at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.
Musicologist and anthropologist awarded summer NEH fellowships Music professor Annegret Fauser and anthropology professor Lorraine Aragon in UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences have been awarded $6,000 fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) for the summer of 2008.
Announcing the 2008 Kenan Music Scholars! Three instrumentalists and a vocalist have been named the second class of Kenan Music Scholars, receiving full scholarships in music to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Research in Music at UNC Chapel Hill

Faculty and graduate students in Music at the University of North Carolina form a rich and multi-faceted research community, working and publishing on a wide range of repertories and issues, from the major historical periods of European and American music to popular musics, gender studies, film music, and aesthetics. Musicological research at UNC is informed by a broad spectrum of theoretical, critical, historical, and analytical approaches, with cutting-edge theoretical work especially in the fields of popular music, musical theater, gay cinema, and reception history. Faculty have published widely and internationally, with recent books and editions covering such varied topics as Monteverdi's music for the theater, the Commedia dell' Arte, late medieval musical sources and institutions, the relationship of instrumental music and philosophy in the early nineteenth century, Schumann's Second Symphony, music at the 1889 Paris World's Fair, Schönberg's Second String Quartet, and Latin popular music in Havana and New York City.

This diversity of faculty interests creates a culture of research characterized by a broader synergy encompassing colleagues and graduate students alike, not only within the Music Department, but within the broader university as a whole. These connections are fostered by such forums as the Carolina Symposia in Music and Culture, a lecture series that brings distinguished outside scholars to our campus each year for lectures and seminars; national and international conferences organized and presented at UNC-Chapel Hill; the biennial Festival on the Hill; and participation in the South Central Graduate Music Consortium. Faculty at UNC-Chapel Hill are past and present editors of book series and such journals as Beethoven Forum, the Journal of Musicology, and Music & Letters. Our faculty also serve on numerous editorial boards and participate in major scholarly organizations such as the American Musicological Society, the Society for Music Theory, and the Society for Seventeenth-Century Music.
