David McChesney (Lecturer) joined the Brass Area faculty as a trumpet instructor in 1996. McChesney holds a Doctor of Music from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, a Master of Science in Education from the University of Illinois, and a Bachelor of Music in Education from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His teachers include John Harding, Jim Ketch, Ray Sasaki, David Hickman, and Charles Gorham.
McChesney’s background in trumpet pedagogy includes work at all levels from beginning instrumentalists to graduate students in music performance. His further experience as a high school and elementary instrumental educator, and college ensemble director give him a unique set of experiences to share with students in Chapel Hill. He is the Director of Fine Arts at Ravenscroft School in Raleigh and conductor of the Tar River Symphonic Band, a professional ensemble comprised of performers from central and eastern North Carolina.
McChesney’s association with the International Trumpet Guild began as an undergraduate at Carolina. He has participated in the Festival of Trumpets concert at annual conferences in Amherst, MA, Denver, CO, Columbus, GA, Fort Worth, TX, Minneapolis, MN, Bangkok, Thailand and Sydney, Australia.
An accomplished performer, McChesney is principal trumpet of the Triangle Chamber Orchestra and the Tar River Symphony Orchestra. He was invited to perform unaccompanied solo trumpet works as part of the “The Music for London Gala Concert Series” at Cadugan Hall, London in December of 2011. He performed as principal trumpet with the Spoleto Festival Orchestra in Charleston, South Carolina and the Festival dei Due Monde Orchestra in Spoleto, Italy from 1989-1996. As a commercial player, he performed as lead trumpet for the North Carolina Theater Orchestra in the 1996-1999 seasons. For ten years, he was a member of the Central Park Band, a group that performed throughout North Carolina, providing music from jazz standards to pop music’s greatest hits. McChesney played trumpet on the main menu loops for the video games Star Trek: Legacy and Marvel VS.
McChesney lives in Raleigh with his wife, Elisabeth (UNC class of 1980), and their two children, Tim and Caroline.
