The Music Department of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks:
- To provide the sole opportunity within the UNC system for undergraduate students to study music in the liberal arts environment of a major research university.
- To provide the sole opportunity within the UNC system, and one of only two within the state, for graduate students to pursue the study of musical scholarship—history and theory—amidst the resources of a major research university.
- To serve the UNC system, the state, and the nation as an internationally recognized center for research in music history and theory and for creative work in musical composition and performance.
- To enrich the campus and the region through concerts, lectures, and other public events, and to provide opportunities for musical performance by students, faculty, guest artists, and members of the community.
