Graduate students play an active role in the life of the Department. In addition to the many informal settings in which students and faculty interact outside the classroom, the Faculty-Student Committee provides a formal venue for discussing issues curricular and other administrative issues relating to the graduate program. At the beginning of each academic year, students elect three of their colleagues as representatives to this committee. Elected student representatives also serve on the Music Library Committee, the Department’s Technology Committee, and the Carolina Symposia in Music and Culture Committee.

The South Central Graduate Music Consortium consists of graduate music students from UNC, Duke University, and the University of Virginia, and sponsors a graduate student conference annually.
