Graduate Student (1st Year)

Involving himself in the music scenes of Brooklyn, NY over the past decade, Mike Levine has obsessively sought out the tools needed to construct lasting and sustainable local music scenes. From conducting case studies that chart Brooklyn’s rise and fall as a hotbed for independent music scenes in the 1990s and 2000s, his research now takes him to Cuba’s protest punk music scene. This study will survey the artists producing music in this vibrant and controversial area, while examining questions of national and political identity for the artists involved. Mike looks forward to contributing knowledge of this burgeoning field, and and towards a greater understanding of how groups of musicians fund and perform their music amidst challenging political and economic circumstances.
