Prospective Student Information

by admin-oasis last modified 2007-11-12 09:54
The Music Department offers two graduate degrees, the Master of Arts (M.A.) and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Musicology. The former is normally regarded as preparatory to the latter; most students entering our graduate programs will intend to proceed to the Ph.D., and our financial-aid packages assume this intention. However, students without a master’s degree must apply for the M.A. and the Ph.D degrees (i. e., fill out the application for the M. A. degree, and tick the box "I plan to pursue the Ph.D. degree.") Students with an M.A. (or equivalent) in musicology may apply for only the Ph.D. degree; such entrance may be granted on a provisional basis pending successful completion of our doctoral qualifying examination in the second semester of the first year.

Detailed instructions on how to apply are available by clicking the "How To Apply" link in the left-hand menu bar (under "Prospective Students"). These guidelines explain all required steps for the application process.

Application forms (both paper and online) are available at the Graduate School website. For the most current information on our department’s programs and their requirements, please see the Music Department's Graduate Handbook as well as the relevant websites listed below.

The Graduate School has established January 1 as the deadline in the competition for University-wide fellowships. For this reason, you should have your application, recommendations, scores, and transcripts sent to the Graduate School by that date. This also means that you should take the GRE General Examination in time to have your scores reported before the end of the calendar year.

The Department does not require the GRE Music Examination, but it does administer its own diagnostic test, which you must take for admission. We will send you this three-hour written test when we receive your application. In addition, we require you to submit with your application a sample of recent written work on a musical subject (e.g., a term paper or thesis). We begin considering candidates for admission in early January and will notify successful candidates by the end of March. The Department admits students only for the fall of a given academic year. Please note as well that direct admission to the Ph.D. program requires the equivalent of our M.A. in musicology and is granted on a provisional basis, pending successful completion of our doctoral qualifying examination in the second semester of the first year.

In addition to exploring our websites, we encourage you to visit our campus, meet with faculty and graduate students, and learn about our program first-hand. We especially encourage your coming to campus on Friday-Saturday, January 11-12, 2008, when our department will host seminars and receptions for prospective students. You may also take our required diagnostic exams for history and theory during this visit.

Our faculty would also be happy to visit with you during our reception at the annual meeting of the American Musicological Society on Friday, November 2, 2007, 5:30-7:30. Please email Professor John Nádas (jancsi@isis.unc.edu) for information about this event.

Should you have any questions about our program or the application process, please feel free to write me (sevneff@aol.com) or call (919/962-1039). We appreciate your interest in our department.

Yours sincerely,
Severine Neff
