Anthony Dean Griffey to Join Music Faculty as Artist-in-Residence We are delighted to welcome internationally renowned tenor Anthony Dean Griffey to our faculty this year as artist-in-residence. His affiliation with UNC-Chapel Hill adds to the strong reputation in the Arts which Carolina is building. During the year, Mr. Griffey will be coaching and teaching master classes to our voice students and to our Kenan Scholars’ cohort, working with chamber music students and UNC Opera students, and speaking in select academic classes.
Announcing the 2009-2010 Kenan Music Scholars The Music Department, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is delighted to announce the appointment of the following four Kenan Music Scholars set to enter the university in fall 2009. They will join our eight current Kenan Music Scholars in this exciting and innovative program.

Melissa Martin  (Lecturer) received her Bachelor of Arts in Music and Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Master of Music from the Manhattan School of Music.  She received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, where she was a recipient of the David Reeves Scholarship and the Naumberg Scholarship.  Dr. Martin’s operatic performances include the roles of Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, Valencienne in Die Lustige Witwe, Rose Maurrant in Street Scene, Belinda in Dido and Aeneas,  Zerlina in Don Giovanni, Annina in La Traviata and Gertrude Stein in The Mother of Us All.  A versatile performer committed to contemporary music, she was featured in the UNC Opera world premiere performance of James Legg’s The Power of Xingu as Mrs. Garnett.  She also created the role of Joy in the children’s opera, The Araboolies of Liberty Street by Ronald Perera, and appeared as Marni in the world premiere of the musical Child of God at New York City’s Ohio Theater.  Dr. Martin has also performed in recitals and concerts throughout the United States and Italy.  Prior to joining UNC’s Music Department, she was a part-time Lecturer at Rutgers University.
