Anthony Dean Griffey to Join Music Faculty as Artist-in-Residence We are delighted to welcome internationally renowned tenor Anthony Dean Griffey to our faculty this year as artist-in-residence. His affiliation with UNC-Chapel Hill adds to the strong reputation in the Arts which Carolina is building. During the year, Mr. Griffey will be coaching and teaching master classes to our voice students and to our Kenan Scholars’ cohort, working with chamber music students and UNC Opera students, and speaking in select academic classes.
Announcing the 2009-2010 Kenan Music Scholars The Music Department, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is delighted to announce the appointment of the following four Kenan Music Scholars set to enter the university in fall 2009. Stefan Litwin (George Kennedy Distinguished Professor), was born 1960 in Mexico City. Studied piano, interpretation and composition in the United States and Switzerland. Among his teachers were Jürg Wyttenbach, Walter Levin and Charles Rosen. Important input also from Herbert Brün.

 

International concert activity. Performances with renowned orchestras and conductors (incl. Christoph von Dohnányi, Michael Gielen and Marek Janowski.) Chamber music with partners such as Aurèle Nicolet, Christian Tetzlaff, Irvine Arditti, Gustav Rivinius, Manuel Fischer-Dieskau, Ib Hausmann, Jörg Widmann, and the LaSalle, Arditti, Danel and Minguet Quartets. Lieder-Recitals with Roland Hermann, Henry Herford, Yaron Windmüller, and Salome Kammer.

Special interest in contemporary music. Numerous world premieres. Collaboration with composers such as Luigi Nono, Luciano Berio, Hans Zender, Herbert Brün, Frederic Rzewski, Johannes Kalitzke, Jörg Widmann and Michael Gielen.

Televison and Radio Broadcasts in Europe and the United States. CD-Productions for Deutschen Grammophon, Auvidis/Montaigne, Arte Nova, Cala Records, telos, cpo, col legno, hänssler.

Compositions (selection): "Sonata y destrucciones" (Neruda) (1998); Lyon 1943 (Pièce de résistance) (1999); Rein oder unrein? (Satire) (2001); Thoreau's Nightmare (2003); "Allende, 11. September 1973" (2004); The Bells (Poe) (2006). A new orchestral version of the Lyon Piece was premiered by the Orchestre national de Lyon in October 2005 under Jun Märkl.

Stefan Litwin has been Professor for Contemporary Music and Interpretation at the Hochschule für Musik Saar since 1992. He was also a Fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin from 2003 until 2005, where he presented numerous Lecture-Recitals and worked on a larger compositional project. During the season 2005/06, he was Distinguished Artist in Residence at Christ College, Cambridge University, UK.
