Anthony Dean Griffey to Join Music Faculty as Artist-in-Residence We are delighted to welcome internationally renowned tenor Anthony Dean Griffey to our faculty this year as artist-in-residence. His affiliation with UNC-Chapel Hill adds to the strong reputation in the Arts which Carolina is building. During the year, Mr. Griffey will be coaching and teaching master classes to our voice students and to our Kenan Scholars’ cohort, working with chamber music students and UNC Opera students, and speaking in select academic classes.
Announcing the 2009-2010 Kenan Music Scholars The Music Department, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is delighted to announce the appointment of the following four Kenan Music Scholars set to enter the university in fall 2009. David McChesney (Lecturer) joined the faculty as a studio trumpet instructor in 1996. Professor McChesney holds a Doctor of Music from the School of Music at Indiana University. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Music in Education. His Master of Science in Education is from the University of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois. Dr. McChesney is a student of John Harding, Jim Ketch, Ray Sasaki, David Hickman and Charles Gorham.

 

David's background in teaching includes work at all levels from beginning instrumentalists to graduate students in music performance. Experience as a high school and elementary instrumental instructor, college band director and studio trumpet teacher give Dr. McChesney a unique set of experiences to share with students in Chapel Hill. Professor McChesney is the Brass Notes editor for the North Carolina Music Educator.

An accomplished performer, Dr. McChesney is principal trumpet of the Triangle Chamber Orchestra and the Tar River Symphony Orchestra and Band. David performed as principal trumpet with the highly acclaimed Sploleto Festival Orchestra in Charleston, South Carolina and the Festival dei Due Monde Orchestra in Spoleto, Italy from 1989-1996. As principal trumpet, David has performed with the Durham Symphony Orchestra, the Raleigh Symphony Orchestra, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Choral Society, the Durham Choral Society and the Raleigh Oratorio Society. As a section player, he has performed with the Anderson Symphony Orchestra, Anderson, Indiana, the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, Indianapolis, Indiana, the Camerata Chamber Orchestra, Bloomington, Indiana, and the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra. Dr. McChesney can be heard performing throughout the Triangle as a member of the Musica Chamber Orchestra.

As a commercial player, David has enjoyed success in the heart of North Carolina as a extra with the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra, and lead trumpet work with Bo Thorpe and Generation 2, Knoxville, Tennessee, and the Casablanca Jazz Orchestra, Raleigh, North Carolina. Dr. McChesney performed as principal trumpet of the North Carolina Theater Orchestra in the 1996-1999 seasons. Currently, he is a member of the Central Park Band, a group, which performs at a wide variety of functions throughout North Carolina, providing music from jazz standards to pop music's greatest hits.

David lives in Raleigh and is supported by his wife, Elisabeth (UNC class of 1980) and their two children Tim and Caroline.
