(Johnny Andrews/UNC-Chapel Hill)

The Voice Area at UNC boasts a long tradition of excellence and vitality. All of our voice studios are housed in the Kenan Music Building. Encompassing 80-90 voice students and two sections of class voice, the area is thriving. In recent years, the Voice Area has hosted clinicians including Metropolitan Opera stars, Alexandra LoBianco, Isabelle Leonard, Lucas Meachem, Christine Goerke, Anthony Dean Griffey, Nathan Gunn, Dawn Upshaw, David Daniels, Frederica von Stade, and Angela Brown. Other recent clinicians include Kristin Chavez, Isai Jess Muñoz, Victoria Clark, Gabriel Kahane, Elizabeth Bishop, Patricia Miller, Donna Roll, Eric Mitchko, John Patrick, and Michael Maniaci, as well as Karen Hall and George Shirley via Skype.

Our students consistently have strong showings at state and regional NATS student auditions (National Association of Teachers of Singing) and many of our undergraduates move on to graduate study at some of the best programs in the country (Eastman, Manhattan, New England, Boston and Peabody Conservatories, University of Michigan, etc.) and/or to teaching or business careers involving music and fine arts. Alumni from our program are working all over the world including: The Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Chicago Lyric, La Scala, Covent Garden, Carnegie Hall, and The Licieu. Students in the program have opportunities to sing in one of our four choral ensembles, UNC Opera, recitals, chamber music, masterclasses and special music festival concerts with world-class artists and composers.
